Study Abroad Programs

Through the Washington State Community College Consortium for Study Abroad (WCCCSA) Whatcom Community College offers study abroad programs to many destinations around the world. WCCCSA, in cooperation with providers like the American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS), offers specially tailored programs for first-time international travelers. Support includes pre-program advising, a pre-departure orientation, as well as in-country support throughout the study abroad program.

Minimum application requirements for study abroad programs include:

  • Being at least 17 years of age (18 years of age for some programs)
  • Completion of at least 10 college-level credits
  • Minimum grade point average of 2.5

  • Winter 2012
  •  

    Valencia/Spain – 10 weeks – 15 credits (Spanish language and Psychology)

    January 6th - March 19th, 2012 (depart U.S. on Jan. 5th, arrive Madrid Jan. 6th, depart Madrid March 19th)

    Program fee: $6,400.00 - $6,900.00 (based on 16+ students) including homestays: single room, two meals/day Mo-Th, three meals/day Fri-Sun; transfers from/to Madrid airport; 2 days in the heart of Madrid incl. accommodations and half-board, cultural excursions and other highlights; full-day excursion to Valencia region, full calendar of weekly activities, small class size for language classes (max. 8 students); medical insurance. Not included: airfare, college tuition and fees (WCC offers special conditions for tuition), textbooks, some meals, passport fees, wire transfer fees, optional weekend trips, speding money, anything else not listed in the program brochure as included.     Australia/New Zealand – 10 weeks – 15 credits

    January 3 - March 10, 2012

    Program fee: $6895 (plus $135 US airport tax) incl. round-trip airfare.

    Classes offered through Whatcom:

    HUM 133 - Australian & New Zealand Life & Culture

    HIST 233 - History of Australia & New Zealand

    BIOL 133 - Natural Science of Australia & New Zealand

    All classes fall under Listed Electives!

  • Student housing accommodations while at Newman College, University of Melbourne

  • Student housing accommodations while at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland

    Florence/Italy – 10 weeks – 15 credits

    Join Whatcom's very own Ben Kohn for a quarter in Florence!

    March 21 - June 1, 2012 (depart U.S. on March 21st, arrive Italy March 22, depart Italy June 1st)

    Program Fee: $6,785 (based on enrollment of 25-29 participants)

    Classes offered:

    HUM 131 - Italian Life and Culture (Listed Elective)

    FILM 101 - Introduction to Film (Humanities)

    MUSC& 105 - Music Appreciation (Humanities)

     

    Included in the program:

    • accommodation in apartments in the Historical Center of Florence. Students will be in twin rooms with typically four students sharing a two-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen for cooking meals.

    • Orientation program in Florence incl. a meeting with AIFS staff, student information packet, local area information, welcome dinner and half-day guided walking tour of Florence.

    • Fully staffed AIFS office on site: program coordinator and student advisors provide information, personal advising/counseling and 24-hour emergency contact service.

    • Weekly program of subsidized cultural activities. Allows students to experience typical Italian pastimes and to explore the city in depth. Includes walking tours, traditional cooking classes, wine-tasting lectures, ballet, soccer matches, a day-trip to Pisa, concerts, film nights and more.

    • Museum pass for each student valid for the duration of the program with unlimited entry to the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia, Bargello, Pitti Palace, San Marco Museum and Medici Chapel

    • Guided day trip to the medieval town of Siena and to the walled hilltop town of San Gimignano.

    • Membership with borrowing rights to the British Institute Library in Florence.

    • Free wireless Internet access in the Study Center during class hours Monday - Friday plus free wireless Internet in the apartments!

    • $50 non-refundable application fee.

    • Student medical and program fee refund insurance policies.

  • Summer 2012

    Costa Rica - 4 weeks - 5 credits

    August 18 - September 15, 2012

    Program Fee: $2,779.00 (based on enrollment of up to 14 participants)

    Classes offered: 5 credits of Spanish (Level 121 - 223)

    Included in the program:

  • Visit to Poas Volcano and La Paz. Transportation, entrance fees, and lunch included.
  • 3 day, 2 night excursion to Manuel Antonio National Park. Breakfast, lodging, and transportation included.

  • 4 weeks of accommodations with a local host family, including breakfast and dinner 7 days/week.

  • Intensive Spanish language courses at the ICLC language school (20 hours of instruction per week). No prior Spanish language proficiency required.

  • Pre-departure and on-site orientation program.

  • Alajuela city tour and welcome lunch.

  • Doka coffee plantation tour.

  • Farewell lunch.

  • Not included:

    Airfare, tuition at the home institution, passport or visa fees if applicable, meals other than those indicated on the itinerary, personal expenses, additional field trips or excursions required by ICLC and anything not specified!

    London/England – 10 weeks – 15 credits

    September 28 - December 7, 2012 (depart U.S. on Sept. 28th, arrive London Sept. 29th, depart London Dec. 7th)

    Program Fee: $6,675 (based on enrollment of 25 or more participants)

    Classes offered:

    HUM 130 - British Life & Culture (Humanities)

    PHIL& 101 - Introduction to Philosophy (Humanities)

    PHIL 110 - Critical Thinking (Humanities)

    Included in the program:

    • Accommodation in a twin room in a homestay within a residential neighborhood of London in the inner 3 zones of the London transport system. Continental breakfast (see brochure) will be provided in the homestay five days a week (Mon - Fri) and dinner four days a week (Mon - Thurs). Students will have access to the kitchen for the preparation of any other meal.

    • Two-day orientation program consisting of a meeting with AIFS staff, workshop on cultural differences, safety/security and travel; student information packet including comprehensive student handbook; local area information; welcome receiption and half-day guided sightseeing tour of London by private coach.

    • Subsidized cultural program of events, including five day trips (on Fridays, to Oxford, Stonehenge and Salisbury, Bath, Brighton and Stratford-on-Avon), 4 theater events, a football or rugby match and a walking tour. 
    • Access to the wireless-enabled AIFS Studen Center and the services of an experienced AIFS program coordinator and AIFS Student Advisors for in formation, personal advising/counseling and 24-hour emergency contact service.

    • Membership of the University of London Union, which gives access to the Union facilities, subsidized rates to sports facilities and the opportunity to join University of London clubs and societies.

    • Access to the student computer lab located in the AIFS Student Center with free wireless Internet access and printing facilities.

    • $50 non-refundable application fee.

    • Student medical and program fee refund insurance policies.

    • London Transport travel pass, valid for unlimited use on buses and underground trains in travel zones 1, 2, and 3 for the duration of the program.

    Not included:

    • Airfare

    • College tuition and books

    • Passport and visa fees

    • additional field trips or excursions required by WCCCSA faculty

    • Personal and entertainment expenses

    • Independent travel and expenses during and after the program
