Film 165: Intro to Film Noir
Film 165 examines the tensions felt by the Post War development of the United States, from the elevation in Cold War anxiety to the threat of American masculinity as women found independence in work. Film Noir will be studied, from its origins in social changes to its underlying cultural values, through examining a visual style in American filmmaking and how censorship codes affected filmmakers of the Noir period. The course will examine the visual style in different genres, as well as examine several of the major auteurs (directors) of the style, and filmmakers whose origins extend beyond the shores of America.
