Welcome to WCC’s Department of Library & Information Science!
Research instruction is a primary mission of the Library. We offer a variety of instruction to help our WCC students succeed at research and become Information Literate.
Information Literacy is the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and to effectively and ethically use the needed information. (American Library Association)
Library faculty provide research instruction through one-on-one consultation at the reference desk, quarterly drop-in classes on Information Literacy, customized research instruction sessions for faculty, and library credit courses. We also create pathfinders, bibliographies, research guides and handouts to assist in the research process.
Instruction is provided in our computer-equipped instruction room, providing plenty of hands-on experience.
Credit Courses
LIBR 194 Special Topics in Research (1 credit)
This 1-credit course is designed to link with an academic course which requires research and/or a research paper. The course provides students with a basis for academic research in a specific discipline, including proper citation formats, avoiding plagiarism, and an introduction to advanced research. This course can be repeated up to 5 times for credit.
LIBR 100 Learning for the 21st Century (5 credits)
This is an online course which introduces students to the research process, using print and online formats, emphasizing building transferable skills for lifelong learning.
Research Instruction:
Library faculty are available to provide research instruction throughout the quarter. Most of our instruction provides hands-on, active and collaborative learning. We always tailor research instruction to your specific needs, assignments and desired outcomes. We can help your students become information literate and more successful researchers. To request an instruction session, go to the Library’s homepage, select the “Contact Us” tab and the Submit an Instruction request (for faculty) link.
Information Literacy Classes
The library also offers four 1-hour information literacy drop-in classes during each academic quarter. Classes will include:
- Ready, Set, Research! Library Basics
- To Cite or Not to Cite? That is the APA/MLA Question
