Film 140: Documentary Film

Film 140 will examine the wide range of motives and styles, from Nazi propaganda to ethnographic films to the evening news.  Students with little or no formal film background will be introduced to the basic elements of documentary film, from the advent of film to the current resurgence in the form.  We will discuss the relationship of documentary film to conscience, knowledge, art, and ideology.  The course will explore such aspects of documentary film making as director personality, funding, and ethical considerations in producing documentary films.
